In 2017, they had the honor of being the fourth largest arms trader in the entire world and reported about 84% of their revenue as coming from activities related to defense. They feature four business sectors: Mission Systems, Aerospace Systems, Innovation Systems, and Technology Services.

In 2000, they were designated as a Primary Responsible Party for 13 hazardous waste sites under federal law and eight under state law. This company has also been linked to 52 different superfund toxic waste sites.
They have been the target of multiple high-profile civil and criminal cases, most recently in 2012. This controversy began over Northrop Grumman missing their first deadline for their Integrated Air and Missile Battle Command System. In 2016, it was reported that this system had major faults.
One of the worst crashes that Northrop Grumman has ever experienced occurred on April 22, 2019. What makes this crash so unfortunate and terrible is that it was the last remaining N-9M in existence. Northrop Grumman only built four of these planes. The pilot in the plane died due to the crash and the bright yellow wing landed inside the California Rehabilitation Center in Norco, California.
Another recent crash occurred on February 23, 2008, when a B-sAV-12 crashed shortly after taking off at the Andersen Air Force Base. This aircraft had logged almost 5,200 flight hours, but both members of the two-person crew were able to eject and survive. However, the hull loss of the accident was valued around $1.4 billion.
The corporate headquarters of Northrop Grumman is located in West Falls Church, Virginia, near Washington DC, although they operate throughout the world.
