The HAL Tejas is a joint work of the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) Aircraft Research and Design Center (ARDC) of India. The aircraft is a fourth-generation multirole lightweight fighter powered by a single-engine designed for the Indian Air Force and Indian Navy.
The HAL Tejas MK 1 has an external length of 13.2 meters and an external height of 2.6 meters. The fuselage diameter is 1 meter and the tail height is 4.4 meters. The delta wing has a wingspan of 8.2 meters and a wing area of 38.4 square meters. The aircraft has an empty weight of 6,560 kg, a gross weight of 9,800 kg, and a maximum takeoff weight of 13,500 kg. The maximum payload is 5,300 kg and the fuel capacity is 320 US gal. It can accommodate one to two crew members.
The MK 1 is powered by a General Electric F404-GE-IN20 engine. It is an afterburning turbofan with an axial compressor with three fans and seven HP stages, annular combustors, and one LP, and seven HP stage turbine. The engine produces a maximum dry thrust of 12,100 lbf and an afterburning thrust of 20,200 lbf. The aircraft has a maximum cruise speed of 1,066 knots. It has a standard range of 459 nautical miles, a combat range of 280 nautical miles with internal tanks, and a ferry range of 1,726 nautical miles with two external drop tanks. The MK 1 can fly up to 50,000 feet.
The Tejas MK 1 is armed with several guns, rockets, missiles, and bombs. It is loaded with a 23-mm twin-barrel GSh-23 cannon, a total of eight hardpoints (one below the port side intake trunk for targeting pods, six below the wing, and one below the fuselage) with a capacity of 5,700 kg with provisions to carry combinations of S-8 rocket pods, air-to-air missiles such as Astra IR, Astra Mark 1 and 2, R-73, R-77, and ASRAAM, air-to-surface missiles such as BrahMos-NG air-launched cruise missile, KH-59ME, KH-59L, and KH-59T,anti-ship missile including Kh-35 and Kh-59MK. It carries different bombs such as precision-guided munition, laser-guided, cluster munition, and unguided bombs. The aircraft also features Hybrid Elta EL/M-2032 multimode planar array fire control radar.
The Tejas was produced from 2001 up to the present with a total of thirty-three aircraft built.
